St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort(Hypericum perforatum): A remedy long used as an anti-inflammatory, wound-healing nervine, valued for its mild sedative and pain-reducing properties, St. John's Wort has recently regained medical attention. Taken internally, it has traditionally been used to treat neuralgia, anxiety, tension, and similar problems. In addition to neuralgic pain, it will ease fibrositis, sciatica, and rheumatic pain.82 It is especially regarded as an herb to use in the case of menopausal changes triggering irritability and anxiety. It is increasingly recommended in the treatment of depression.83 Recent research has suggested a role for this herb in the treatment of virus infections, from influenza to HIV,84 and thus it is currently the focus of intense investigation. Used externally, it is a valuable healing and anti-inflammatory remedy.85 As a lotion it will speed the healing of wounds and bruises, varicose veins, and mild burns. The oil is especially useful for healing sunburn.
